Potti Sriramulu
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced the installation of a 58-feet tall statue in memory of freedom fighter Potti Sriramulu in Amaravati. Sriramulu's 58-day fast resulted in the formation of Andhra Pradesh in 1953.
Potti Sriramulu fasted for 58 days from October 19 to December 15-16, 1952, demanding a separate Telugu-speaking state under the Madras Presidency.
His demise led to widespread protests, forcing Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to announce the formation of Andhra Pradesh on October 1, 1953.
His gallant fight laid the foundation for the formation of states on linguistic basis in India.
Other major developments
A grand memorial will be built in memory of Potti Sriramulu in Amaravati.
His ancestral house at Padmatipally in Prakasam district will be converted into a museum.
A modern health centre and high school will be set up in his village.
CM Naidu's statement: Chief Minister Naidu underlined the historical contribution of Sriramulu, saying that he played an important role in strengthening self-introduction and cultural pride after independence.
Trend of statues in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
Several big statues have been unveiled in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in recent years.
April 2023: Then Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) unveiled a 125 feet tall B.R. Ambedkar statue in Hyderabad.
January 2024: Then Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy unveiled a 206 feet tall Ambedkar statue in Vijayawada.
Interestingly, both KCR's BRS and Jagan's YSRCP lost the elections, bringing the current TDP coalition government to power in Andhra Pradesh.
