Now parents' consent is necessary for children to open an account on social media

Nearly 16 months after the Data Protection Act 2023 was passed by Parliament, the Central Government has released the draft of the rules.

The most important aspect of these is that children (boys and girls under 18 years of age) will be able to open an account on social media only with the approval of parents or guardians.

• To start a child's account, the social media company will have to ensure that the parents have truly given consent.

• Parental consent will also be required for processing their private data.

• Confirmation of the identity and age of those giving consent has been made mandatory.

• The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has sought objections or suggestions on the draft by February 18.

• There is no mention of punishment for violation of rules in this draft.

• However, the law provides for a fine of up to Rs 250 crore on the concerned company in case of breach of personal data.
